A bareboat is a yacht that the client charters and opertates on their own with their own crew. The “bare” part just means “no permanent crew”. A bareboat charter is an arrangement for the hiring of a boat, whereby no crew or provisions are included as part of the agreement. The nominated skipper must be experienced in all aspects of boat handling, navigation and have knowledge of the collision regulations. The skipper takes full liability for the safety of the crew and the vessel.
A qualified skipper is hired together with the vessel and they are responsible for both the safety of the passengers/clients and yacht. One crewmember must have previous knowledge, as assistance with certain boat handling duties may be required.
A group of vessels under the supervision of a lead boat. Individual yachts accommodate groups of friends/families and a sociable environment is created with the other yachts participating in the flotilla. Itinerary is set and morning briefings are given to advise on that days destination together with local hazards to avoid on route. Boat knowledge is essential for the nominated skipper and ideally the crew. Safety and support is ensured by the yachts traveling together.
